Raleigh City Council has approved $22.8 million in funding for multiple projects aimed at creating 454 affordable housing units across the city. This decision, made during a meeting on Tuesday, highlights the city’s commitment to making housing accessible for residents.

Council allocated $15.7 million for the construction of 160 affordable homes in the Moore Square area. These units will cater to families earning between 30% and 80% of the area’s median income (AMI) and will include 51 one-bedroom, 77 two-bedroom, and 32 three-bedroom apartments. A portion of these homes will be designated for supportive housing through the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency’s Targeting program and Wake County’s Rental Assistance Housing Program, which provide essential services for individuals experiencing homelessness or living with disabilities.

Also, the council approved $7.1 million in gap financing to ensure the completion of 294 affordable rental units in two new communities: Maple Ridge and Strickland Apartments. Maple Ridge will consist of 146 units, including 16 one-bedroom, 82 two-bedroom, and 48 three-bedroom apartments, with 41 units reserved for households earning between 20% and 50% AMI. Strickland Apartments will offer 148 homes, featuring 37 one-bedroom, 75 two-bedroom, and 36 three-bedroom units, with some set aside for families earning between 20% and 60% AMI.

The council’s decision reflects a concerted effort to enhance housing accessibility in Raleigh, ensuring that residents can find homes near public transportation, grocery stores, and healthcare facilities, ultimately making it easier for families to live and work in the city.
