Barringer Construction has started renovation work on the 645,000 sq. ft. Charlotte Plaza office building.

The $14 million renovation plan, announced last fall, includes creating a more “open experience” in the double-height entrance from College St., the Overstreet Mall and parking deck.

The lobby renovation is expected to be complete in spring 2018.

Architecture firm Gensler, led by John Gaulden and Scott MacMeekin, conceptualized the design.

“In addition to bringing light in the lobby, the renovations are about connections — building to street, people to building and one another,” MacMeekin said in a statement reported in Charlotte Business Journal.

The new interior will feature a bespoke lighting fixture by London design firm Luum Studio. Foundry Commercial is handling project management.

“This is one of our most exciting building renovations to date,” Rabina Properties president Mickey Rabina said in a statement. “Since acquiring the property in 2015, we have envisioned modernizing and transforming Charlotte Plaza for the benefit of our current and future tenants, and we are thrilled to get started.”
