The City of Wilmington held an open house May 16 for the Greater Downtown Plan initiative and is inviting stakeholders to complete take an online survey to share ideas on the community’s needs for future developments.

Six informational stations were set up, covering project overview, transportation (Getting Around), community identity (Sense of Place), business diversity (Doing Business), economic development, and visionary goals (Dream Big). Each station presented key findings and solicited feedback.

The next open house will be held June 8 at the DREAMS Center Community Day from noon to 5 p.m.

The Small Area Plan focuses on specific neighborhoods within Wilmington. Unlike a comprehensive plan, this targeted approach allows for tailored recommendations addressing the unique needs and concerns of the area. The plan aims to develop equitable strategies, actionable steps, and implement policies from the Create Wilmington Comprehensive Plan.

The project team, working with Agency Landscape + Planning and other subconsultants, will be attending various community events to gather input.

Also, individuals interested in community development are encouraged to apply for the Greater Downtown Plan Steering Committee which will provide strategic direction and ensure community feedback is integrated into the plan.

Members will review input, share personal insights, and guide project actions. The committee will meet 3-5 times during the plan’s development, with advance notice of meetings.

To apply for the Steering Committee, submit this application.

Residents have been voting on the three most important topics for the future of the Greater Downtown area at in-person events and through an online survey. The combined results will help shape the focus of the plan. Community members are urged to continue participating in the survey and attend upcoming events to make their voices heard.
