After almost 10 years of discussion and planning, Rowan-Salisbury Schools has finally broken ground on the site of the new West Rowan Elementary School with a projected $27.5 million cost.

Board of Education and Rowan County Board of Commissioners.members attended the Nov. 20 ceremony, joined by local government officials, business leaders, teachers and students.

The new school will feature a 100,000 sq. ft. building and is expected to be completed by Dec. 2018. It will be built on a 41-acre lot behind the Cleveland Elementary School, which will be demolished.

Originally, the Board of Education looked for a neutral property near the Woodleaf and Cleveland communities. They presented several properties to the public but they each of them were dismissed. This is why the board decided to settle for the current site.

The designer is SfL+A Architects, while Barnhill Contracting will handle construction.
