Community leaders and development partners gathered in downtown High Point to celebrate the groundbreaking of Elwood on Main, a historic redevelopment project that will transform the former Showplace West building in Highpoint into a mixed-use residential community.
The project will convert the nine-story building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, into a 143-unit luxury multifamily development featuring modern amenities and ground-floor commercial space.
The redevelopment is expected to bring new housing opportunities and economic activity to the city’s downtown core while preserving one of High Point’s historic landmarks.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, community leaders highlighted the project’s role in advancing downtown revitalization efforts and addressing housing demand.
“Projects like Elwood on Main demonstrate what can be accomplished when public, private and community partners work together to invest in the future of our city,” said Cyril Jefferson, who attended the event alongside local officials, Downtown High Point representatives and project partners.
The development will breathe new life into the former Showplace West property, a building that has long been part of High Point’s downtown landscape. Developers plan to preserve the structure’s historic character while adapting it for residential and commercial use.
Supporters say the project aligns with broader efforts to strengthen downtown High Point by increasing housing options, attracting new residents and supporting local businesses.
The addition of 143 apartments is expected to contribute to the city’s growing need for housing while creating a built-in customer base for downtown retailers, restaurants and service providers.
The commercial component of the project will provide space for neighborhood-oriented businesses, further enhancing activity along Main Street.
Construction is now underway, marking the start of a significant investment in the city’s urban core. Once completed, Elwood on Main is expected to serve as a catalyst for continued redevelopment and economic growth in downtown High Point.
