Gov. Roy Cooper visited Green River Cove in Polk County this week to survey storm damage caused by Hurricane Helene on the Green River and surrounding communities.
“Today I traveled to Green River Cove to survey storm damage and meet with local officials,” Cooper said. “It’s heartening to see the community working together to rebuild and support each other during this difficult time.”Cooper also signed Senate Bill 743 into law, allocating $600 million in disaster relief and recovery funds. The storm caused significant damage across Western North Carolina, affecting infrastructure, homes and businesses.
In light of the extensive damage, Cooper has proposed a $3.9 billion funding package to support rebuilding efforts. Initial estimates suggest the storm has caused more than $53 billion in damage, the largest in state history.
To date, over 1,700 soldiers and airmen from the North Carolina National Guard are assisting in recovery efforts, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is evaluating water and wastewater facilities in the area.
FEMA has also provided $168.4 million to disaster survivors and more than 226,000 have registered for aid, and nearly 1,700 FEMA staff are on the ground to help facilitate assistance.Anyone in need of support can apply by calling 1-800-621-3362 or visiting www.disasterassistance.gov.
