CPN of North Carolina announces 2020 Star Award winners

The annual Construction Professionals Network (CPN) of North Carolina conference has been rescheduled to March, 2021 because of COVID-19. However, the association has proceeded with its annual Star Awards program, representing “outstanding construction and design projects completed throughout North Carolina that positively influence our community and industry.”

In a statement, CPN says three awards were given – one for projects with construction costs under $10 million, one for construction costs $10 million to $25 million, and third award for construction costs greater than $25 million.

Under $10 million project – “Greensboro Aquatic Center 4th Pool” – Greensboro

“The Greensboro Aquatic Center was already a world class facility, adding the fourth pool continues that tradition and adds to the events that can be hosted there,” the award citation says.  Participating CPN members include:

  • Leo Stepansky, Shelco, LLC – General contractor
  • Aaron Bopp, SKA Consulting Engineers, Inc. – Engineer
  • Dan Goley, Chandler Concrete – Concrete supplier
  • Jim Mangini, Hoffman & Hoffman – Mechanical equipment supplier
  • Ron Pitts, Systems Contractors, Inc. – mechanical designer
  • Zane Sharpe, Sharpe Images – Virtual plan room host and printer for drawings
  • Richard Vanstory, Sr., R. L. Vanstory Co. LLC – Electrical supplier

$10 million – $25 million project – “City of Winston-Salem Union Station Restoration and Renovation, Phase I” – Winston-Salem

“Union Station is a great example of preserving the character of old buildings. The team took notice of all of the details to bring it back to the original charm,” the citation says.

Participating members include:

  • Maurice Harrison, Schneider Electric – Building management/energy management system

Over $25 million project – “Truist Point Stadium” – High Point

“The city invested in downtown to provide a catalyst for economic growth in the area. This stadium is a great example of thoughtful design and dedicated construction professionals.”

Participants include:

  • Ken Grube, Samet Corporation – Design Builder
  • Brian Maas, Sun Breza, ECS Limited – Owner third party testing and special inspections agency
  • Gary Rogers, D. H. Griffin – Demolition trade partner
  • Ron Pitts, Systems Contractors, Inc. – Mechanical trade and design build partner
  • Dan Goley, Chandler Concrete – Concrete supplier

“The CPN Star Award is a symbol of excellence in construction and the selection is based on the merits and challenges of the project,” CPN says in its statement. “In presenting the Star Awards, CPN honors both the projects and the CPN members who participated in completing the projects.”

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the 2020 CPN of North Carolina Annual Conference at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia has been rescheduled to spring of 2021.
