Columbus County Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony last week for East View Elementary-Middle School in Bolton, marking a major step forward in a long-planned project for the eastern end of the county.Located on 40 acres, the facility has been designed to accommodate 950 students in grades pre-K through 8.

A $52 million state-allocated needs-based-grant is providing 95% of the project’s total budget while Columbus County is providing a state-required 5% match. Schools and county officials received notification of the grant in February 2024. Speakers at Thursday’s gathering thanked N.C. House Majority Leader Brenden Jones of Tabor City for his advocacy in securing the state funds.

“This project marks an important investment in education, community, and the next generation,” project contractor Metcon said on social media. “Metcon is proud to be part of this impactful project.”

Designed by LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD., the new 118,235 square foot PK–8 facility will accommodate up to 950 students and feature updated classrooms, a media center, gym, and cafeteria. Supporting collaboration, growth, and a stronger learning environment.

Under the terms of the grant, construction had to begin by the end of February 2026 — a requirement school officials said has already been met through early site work. The school is anticipated to open in August 2027.

East View is the first project where Columbus County Schools is following the “construction manager at risk” delivery method.

While the original estimate was $60 million, LS3P and Metcon presented a $68 million estimate in May 2025, citing the increase on inflation in the construction industry.
