Skanska has announced the topping out of the Health Sciences Building at Durham Tech Community College in Durham. The milestone marks significant construction progress on the health sciences facility, which is expected to be completed in November 2027.
The new 80,000-square-foot building will house four classrooms, two computer labs, 15 allied health labs and simulation spaces, 1,600 square feet of student collaboration areas, and 14,000 square feet of academic support areas. The $68.5 million facility is designed to serve the college’s nursing, surgical technology, anesthesia technology, respiratory therapy, clinical research, and occupational therapy programs.
“Reaching this milestone is a testament to the skill and dedication of every worker and partner who has contributed to this project,” said Mark Balling, executive vice president and general manager for Skanska’s Mid-Atlantic region. “The Health Sciences Building will be a transformative asset for Durham Tech students and the broader Triangle Region, equipping the next generation of allied health professionals with the hands-on training environments they need to enter the workforce.”
Representatives from Durham Tech Community College, Lord Aeck Sargent, Skanska, and the project’s subcontractors and tradespeople gathered on-site to sign the final beam and place the final structural element last week.
Construction highlights to date include:
- 1,519 cubic yards of concrete poured
- 510 tons of structural steel
- 94,664 linear feet of electrical conduit
To date, Skanska has constructed 129 specialty and life science spaces in support of higher education and healthcare partners at the forefront of research and development.
