The City of Raleigh’s Planning Commission is encouraging residents and industry professionals to review the 2030 Comprehensive Plan Update and provide feedback to key elements that have been modified in the Oct. 26 installment.

Inputs can be made either by taking an online survey or by sending an email to bynum.walter@raleighnc.gov. Deadline for responses is on Dec. 10.

The 2030 Comprehensive Plan was implemented on Oct. 7 after two years of studying feedback from the Planning Commission and hundreds of residents. It addresses all aspects of Raleigh’s quality of life, with a concentration on preserving neighborhoods, establishing a strong economy, constructing ample parks and recreational facilities, improving mobility for all modes of transportation, and protecting the region’s natural resources.

In terms of economic development, the plan has three goals: attracting new businesses, retaining and expanding existing ones, and creating conditions for productive investment in parts of the city that suffered from disinvestment or lack of investment.

By offering incentives, the plan will promote mixed-use zoning development, encouraging construction of niche office spaces. It also identified 18 areas with economic potential that need development intervention.

The Oct. 26 update refines and revises parts of the plan to keep it current and relevant. The process involved: updating the graphic design layout of the document to make it easier to read and use; refresh facts, figures and maps included to reflect up-to-date information or emerging trends; incorporate findings of other citywide plans and small corridor plans; include emerging best practices, such as those found in the recent “Sustaining Places: Best Practices for Comprehensive Planning” report by the American Planning Association; and revise implementation to allow monitoring of progress.
