Raleigh has approved a plan to spend $2.26 million on two significant projects: the construction of new homes in the Cottages of Idlewild and renovations to the Studios at 2800.

Earlier this year, Raleigh’s first affordable “cottage court” development was approved, setting the stage for the Cottages of Idlewild. This week, the Council authorized $1.26 million for the construction of 18 affordable homes in the community—14 for sale and 4 for rent. These homes will remain affordable for at least 99 years, ensuring long-term access to housing for future generations.

Renovations at Studios at 2800

In 2021, the city acquired a 119-room hotel on Brentwood Road, now known as the Studios at 2800, to provide extended-stay and permanent affordable housing options. After identifying critical repair needs, the council allocated $1 million for essential upgrades, including plumbing, electrical systems, and new doors and windows.

The contract for this work has been awarded to Shepherd Response, LLC, allowing for prompt progress on repairs and the availability of additional affordable units.

These initiatives are part of Raleigh’s broader effort to provide safe and accessible housing options for its residents. For more details, visit RaleighNC.gov and search for “affordable housing.”
