The City of Greenville is moving forward with a nearly $20 million Town Common project to replace the park’s aging bulkhead and add new features for public use.

City council recently awarded a $14.3 million construction contract to Trader Construction. Work will include replacing the 57-year-old bulkhead, a key structure that helps protect the park from flooding. Council also set aside $3.6 million in contingency funds and more than $538,000 for construction oversight. Another $1.1 million has already been spent on design.

The updates will address flood protection and add a new multi-use path connecting the east and west ends of the park, plus terraced seating, riverfront overlooks, a west plaza, and improvements to the amphitheater loading zone. A boat dock and gangway are also being considered.

A $5 million grant from the state helped make the project possible. The rest of the funding will come from the city’s budget and federal pandemic relief money.

Construction is expected to start in July and take just over a year.
