The Greensboro City Council has approved buying several apartment buildings near the Mitchell Water Treatment Plant for the proposed expansion project.

The city will pay $2.8 million to purchase three tracts which include roughly 40 apartment units. The property owner is Wood Properties.

The 2.5 acres will be used to expand the Mitchell plant with equipment that, among other things, would suppress spikes in the industrial pollutant PFOS and related chemicals, according to Mike Borchers, assistant director of the city Department of Water Resources.
