Construction is underway on an expansion project to create more space at Gaston County’s overcrowded jail.

The project calls for the addition of 72 additional beds to an empty section of the facility next to the Gaston County Courthouse, The Gaston Gazette reports.

The 160,000-sq.-ft. jail and annex has been consistently overcrowded for more than a year, according to the Gazette.

The $10.7-million project is expected to be completed by late 2020, according to Gaston County Public Works Director Ray Maxwell.
