Construction crews reached a significant milestone Tuesday afternoon as the final steel beam was placed atop the stage structure of the new Red Hat Amphitheater, signaling major progress on one of downtown Raleigh’s most anticipated entertainment projects.

The project team includes a construction management joint venture between Skanska, Clancy & Theys Construction Company, and D.A. Everett Construction Group. The Raleigh Convention and Performing Arts Complex and Cumming Group are serving as the owner’s representatives.

The beam placement marks a key step in the construction of the new venue, which is scheduled for completion in time for the 2027 concert season. The City of Raleigh is relocating the amphitheater one block south of its current location as part of Phase 1 of the Raleigh Convention Center Expansion project.Once complete, the new Red Hat Amphitheater will feature more than 6,000 seats, expanding its capacity and enhancing its ability to attract nationally recognized performers and events. The venue is being designed with both artists and attendees in mind, incorporating state-of-the-art facilities, a permanent stage structure, and upgraded support spaces intended to elevate the overall concert experience.

City leaders say the new amphitheater will allow Raleigh to continue hosting major live performances while advancing the city’s long-term vision for a vibrant, connected downtown entertainment district.

“The new Red Hat Amphitheater ensures Raleigh remains a premier destination for live music and entertainment while supporting continued growth in the city center,” project officials said.

Design responsibilities are led by TVS as design architect, with RATIO Design serving as architect of record and landscape architect. The amphitheater relocation is a cornerstone of the broader Raleigh Convention Center Expansion initiative, which aims to strengthen downtown Raleigh’s appeal as a destination for tourism, business, entertainment, and cultural events.

Officials expect construction to continue through 2026, with the venue opening ahead of the 2027 concert season.
