Davidson County commissioner Steve Jarvis has announced that he is running for the North Carolina House of Representatives District 80 seat, according to a news release.

Jarvis has served as a county commissioner since 2012 and is the president of Jarvis Construction of North Carolina.

“During my tenure as county commissioner, I have worked hard to maintain sound fiscal responsibility, enhance the quality of life for our community, support public safety and create an economic environment that is conducive to companies in choosing Davidson County to locate their business,” Jarvis said in the release. “As a commissioner, I have gained first-hand experience on the impact that legislation has on counties and cities and have served on several statewide committees for the NC Association of County Commissioners that are working to reduce the impact of unfunded national and state mandates.”

Rep. Sam Watford, who currently represents the 80th District, announced in November that he will will run for the State Senate in the 33rd District, which covers Davidson and Montgomery counties. Sen. Cathy Dunn, who currently holds the senate seat, said she won’t run for re-election due to health issues, The-Dispatch.com reports.

Jarvis said that if he was elected, he will use his experience as a county commissioner and more than 28 years of experience as a building contractor to make sound financial and moral decisions that will affect future generations.

“The state has made some great improvements in regard to tax reform and economic development,” Jarvis said in the news release. “But, in order to compete in national and global markets for business and industry, we need regulation reform. We must cut the red tape-regulations that often impedes our growth and create a less intrusive government.”

This year’s election candidates can file beginning Feb. 12, with primary elections in May.
