Construction is underway on the new Orangeburg County Courthouse in Orangeburg, S.C., following a groundbreaking ceremony held last week. Representatives from Monteith Construction Corp. joined county officials and project partners to mark the start of work on the facility, which will replace the county’s aging courthouse.
The new courthouse will be built at 1437 Amelia St. and is designed to provide modern judicial facilities for Orangeburg County’s court system while accommodating future growth. County officials have said the existing courthouse no longer meets operational needs because of its age, limited space and outdated layout.
The project has been in development for several years. Demolition of buildings on the site began in 2023 to prepare for construction, and the county issued a request for construction bids in 2025 before awarding the contract. Officials have described the courthouse as a long-term investment in the county’s public infrastructure that will improve access to judicial services for residents.
Construction is expected to take about two years, with the new courthouse serving Orangeburg County residents for decades once complete.
