HITT Contracting Inc. has broken ground on a new headquarters campus for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, marking the first major redevelopment of the agency’s Raleigh site in more than 50 years.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Garner Road with project partners including HITT Contracting Inc. and design firm LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD..
The project will deliver more than 100,000 square feet of new and renovated space designed to modernize the SBI’s operations and consolidate employees currently working across multiple locations into a single campus.
Plans include a new 73,000-square-foot, three-story addition featuring a specialized training center and fitness area, along with a 19,000-square-foot renovation of SBI Building 12. The project also includes a separate logistics building, demolition work, utility upgrades, new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and updated interior finishes.
Officials said the new campus is intended to improve collaboration, efficiency and innovation across the agency.
“This project represents a significant investment in the future of the SBI and the public safety of North Carolina,” SBI Director Roger “Chip” Hawley said in a statement. “By bringing our teams together in a modern, purpose-built environment, we are strengthening our ability to serve our law enforcement partners and the people of this state.”
Planning for the redevelopment began in late 2022. Since then, crews have completed demolition, site preparation and utility installation ahead of vertical construction.
Construction is expected to wrap up in late 2027, with SBI personnel anticipated to move into the new facilities in early 2028.
Hawley also thanked the North Carolina General Assembly, the Governor’s Office, partner agencies and former SBI personnel for supporting the long-term campus investment and the agency’s mission.
