The Housing Authority of Winston-Salem (HAWS), in partnership with the city of Winston-Salem as co-applicant and McCormack Baron Salazar (MBS) as developer, was awarded a $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Funding will be used to redevelop the Cleveland Avenue Corridor.
“The Cleveland Avenue Homes project will revitalize Northeast Winston-Salem by providing high-quality, affordable housing options and enhancing community access to educational opportunities, employment programs, and health care services,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning. “I’m proud to have led the effort in Congress to secure funding for this project and am thrilled to announce an additional $2.5 million in federal support to expand the housing supply and provide vital resources for local residents.”
In 2020 Winston-Salem was awarded a $30 million federal grant to transform the aging Cleveland Avenue Homes public housing neighborhood and the surrounding area under HUD’s CNI program.
The grant was co-awarded to the city and the HAWS. With Phase 1 fully complete, the focus has shifted to the preparation of phases two through five financing and construction. On July 16, 2024, HUD informed the Winston-Salem CNI partners that they had won an additional $2.5 million.
