The City of Charlotte Planning, Design and Development Department has released 14 draft community area plans, a major step in implementing the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
The plans offer detailed guidance on land use, urban design, transportation and infrastructure. Designed to build on the broader vision of the 2040 plan, the community area plans provide policy direction to ensure future development supports sustainable growth and reflects the city’s long-term goals.
“With the introduction of the community area plans, we are taking significant strides toward realizing Charlotte’s future goals,” Interim Planning Director Monica Holmes said. “These plans not only enhance our ability to manage growth effectively but also foster vibrant, resilient neighborhoods that reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of our residents.”Key features include:
- Identification of the greatest needs within each area
- A recommended development pattern tailored to each community
- Identification of public and private investments needed to support future growth
Community feedback is a vital part of the planning process. The city encourages all residents and stakeholders to review the draft plans and share feedback by Friday, May 9.
Draft plans and comment forms are available on the Charlotte Future website. In addition, virtual office hours will be held every Tuesday and Thursday, giving residents a chance to ask questions and learn more about the proposals.
A public hearing is scheduled for Monday, April 28, providing another opportunity for community input.
All feedback will be reviewed for common themes. Charlotte City Council will consider public comments and staff recommendations before making final decisions.
As Charlotte continues to grow, the implementation of these plans reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable development and community-driven growth. Through continued collaboration and input, the community area plans will guide future investments and initiatives that make Charlotte a more vibrant place to live, work and play.
