Construction of a new swimming pool complex was given the green light by the Avery County Board of Commissioners during their regular monthly meeting held Nov. 6, while the contract award for the construction of a new agricultural building to Garanco, Inc. was delayed until the next regular meeting.

Boomerang Designs was chosen to build the complex at a cost of $2,077,075. According to the firm’s principal, Robert Johnson, the project can be completed within two years from the time construction starts.

A number of innovations that will help with water run off on the property, as well as set parameters for development, are also going to be built at the complex site. The country received $187,000 in grant money to create a stormwater mitigation plan that will slow flooding, filter stormwater and improve the waters of Kentucky Creek and the North Toe River.

Meanwhile, commissioners delayed awarding Garanco, Inc. the construction contract for a new agricultural building. The firm submitted the lowest construction bid of $1,399,900. The bid gives allowances of $10,200 for: unsatisfactory soil excavation and replacement mass, $800; unsatisfactory soil excavation and replacement trench, $1,100; rock excavation and replacement mass, $2,750; and rock excavation and replacement mass, $5,550. Another provision includes the 225-day construction period with liquidated damages of $1,000 per day if the firm fails to meet the deadline.

After commissioners Wood Hall Young, Jr. and Michaelle Poore voiced their concerns about which firm will handle the building’s electrical subcontracting and how a change in subcontractor will affect the bid, the board voted unanimously to discuss the contract approval in another meeting.
