Balfour Beatty celebrated the successful completion of demolition activities at the Brooklyn & Church project during a milestone event held May 28 at the project site, marking a significant step forward in the redevelopment of one of Uptown Charlotte’s most prominent properties. The project is being delivered on behalf of Asana Partners in partnership with MRP Realty and Rockefeller Group. City officials, community stakeholders and project team members gathered to recognize the achievement and discuss the importance of adaptive reuse developments in supporting sustainable growth and long-term investment across Charlotte.

Completion of the demolition phase required the removal of approximately 250,000 square feet from the existing structure through a carefully planned structural demolition process. The work created space for a new open-air plaza and prepared tower floors for future residential units.

The scope of demolition also included the removal of 1,800 precast concrete panels from the building’s exterior and the careful dismantling of building sections located over or immediately adjacent to public sidewalks. Project teams successfully completed the work while maintaining public safety and ensuring uninterrupted access to Bank of America Stadium during events.

“This milestone reflects the level of planning and collaboration required on an adaptive reuse project of this scale,” said Jeff Sandeen, president of Balfour Beatty in the Carolinas. “From preconstruction to diversion efforts and the completion of demolition, our teammates have worked consistently to position the project for success. Completing demolition is a major step forward for the Brooklyn & Church development and recognizes the team’s ongoing progress and commitment to safety and sustainability.”

Before demolition began, the project team completed extensive preconstruction planning and early site work activities. The team also led a large-scale material diversion initiative that redirected more than 576 tons of furniture and equipment from landfills.

Through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations, more than 142,000 pounds of furniture and kitchen equipment were donated for reuse across the Carolinas, extending the useful life of materials originally housed within the building while supporting community organizations.

With demolition now complete, construction efforts will transition to the next phase of development, including installation of the building’s new exterior façade and windows, construction of residential units and development of the Marquee Retail Building located at the corner of the site.

The Brooklyn & Church project represents the first office-to-retail and multifamily conversion development of its scale in North Carolina and is expected to play a key role in Charlotte’s continued urban evolution. Upon completion, the mixed-use development will feature 448 luxury residential units and a full city block of walkable retail space.

Planned community amenities include an open-air plaza, green spaces and pedestrian connections designed to link Charlotte’s growing Stadium District with Uptown’s business, arts and cultural destinations.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
