Orion Group awarded $15 million contract for Wilmington Port Turning Basin expansion

Orion Group Holdings, Inc. says it has been awarded an approximately $15 million contract, from the North Carolina State Ports Authority to construct the Turning Basin Expansion project in the Port of Wilmington.

The work includes installing a new bulkhead wall and dredging activities to allow for larger vessels the ability to safely and more efficiently turn around in the Wilmington Harbor, OrionGroup says in a statement. The project is expected to begin in the third quarter with completion planned for early 2020.

“The North Carolina State Ports Authority has been a key customer of Orion’s for many years and we look forward to again helping the Port of Wilmington expand their existing infrastructure to support their strategy,” said Mark Stauffer, Orion’s president and Chief Executive Officer.

The project, the second phase of the turning basin expansion, is part of N.C. Ports’ $200 million capital improvements plan, WilmingtonBiz reported. N.C. Ports spokesperson Bethany Welch as saying. The second phase of the expansion is needed to allow the largest vessels calling the East Coast to “safely and more efficiently turn around in Wilmington’s harbor,” she said.
