North Carolina lost 2,600 construction jobs statewide, a 1.5 percent drop, between April and May, according to a report from the Associated General Contractors of America. Total statewide construction employment was 166,800 at the close of May, down 6,000, or 3.5 percent, from the same month a year prior, the AGC said. That meant North Carolina ranked 47 out of the 50 states in total construction employment for the year.

Nationally, construction employment increased in 27 states, held flat in three and declined in 20 states and Washington, D.C., the AGC report said. “The strongest recoveries in construction employment have occurred in states with oil and gas activity, while the steepest construction job losses have occurred in Sunbelt states,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. North Carolina had added 500 construction positions between March and April.

The Triad’s construction employment was weak in April, with the region losing a net 100 positions compared with the year prior. Read More.
