Wilson County breaks ground on new Frederick Douglass Elementary School

Wilson County Schools and the Elm City community officially broke ground on the new Frederick Douglass Elementary School, a 59,386-square-foot facility designed to serve students from pre-K through fifth grade.

The school, expected to cost $26.58 million, will accommodate 400 students, with a core capacity of up to 500. It will feature 26 classrooms, along with dedicated spaces for art, music, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and a modern media center.Oakley Collier Architects, PA designed the project, and Barnhill Construction will lead the build. Construction is being financed through the Local Government Commission.

Officials said the new school balances modern educational facilities with the community’s local legacy and will provide Elm City students with expanded learning opportunities.
