The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Commission has approved a significant update to the state’s bridge program, adding $200 million in new funding to accelerate bridge repair and replacement projects across the state.

Funding, through a one-time appropriation from the South Carolina General Assembly, increases the 2025 bridge program budget to $439 million—up from the previous $239 million. The Commission also approved a new prioritized list of bridge projects expected to begin in the coming years as part of SCDOT’s 10-year Strategic Plan.

“Thanks to the leadership of Governor McMaster and the General Assembly and their continued investment in South Carolina’s infrastructure, SCDOT is expediting progress and restoring even more bridges in our state,” said Secretary of Transportation Justin P. Powell. “Our team is already hard at work putting this money to use to help people and goods move through South Carolina.”

So far, SCDOT has completed or launched work on 416 bridges under its strategic plan. The new funding will allow the department to accelerate and expand work beyond the original targets.

Of the 119 bridge projects greenlit under the current 2025 program, 109 are already underway, with more than 90 per cent in preliminary engineering or active construction stages

SCDOT will now seek public input to amend the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) to formally include the additional bridge projects. The public comment period is open through August 7, 2025.

Projects span interstate, primary, and secondary routes across multiple counties and include a mix of bridge preservation, repair and full replacement.

The full list of 2025 bridge projects and an interactive map are available on SCDOT’s website. Printed versions can also be reviewed at any SCDOT District Office for those without internet access.

Public comments can be submitted online, by mail, or email. More information is available at SC****************@***ot.org.
