Person County has joined the hunt for a major industry by offering a newly certified 1,394 acre “megasite” to accommodate a large-scale operation. It will be the fifth megasite  – there are two in Chatham County, one in Edgecombe County and one in Randolph County, the Carolinas Associated General Contractors (CAGC) reports in the association’s weekly news brief.

The state designates the sites if they have enough acreage, potential workers and access to roads and utilities to attract big industrial companies. The Person county site will be able to compete with other rural counties, where land has been set aside for manufacturing operations that take up a lot of space.

Person County
Person County is north-east of Raleigh/Durham.

Toyota recently had considered a Randolph County site near Greensboro in determining the site of a joint Toyota-Mazda car manufacturing plant, but chose Alabama instead.

CAGC reports that at the Person County site, geotechnical studies have been done, wetlands and stream issues have been cleared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and environmental, archeological and wildlife studies have been completed. Meanwhile, state transportation officials have approved a long-term traffic study.

The Timmons Group, an engineering consultant with an office in Greensboro, has worked with other counties on their megasite proposals.
