                        "data": "olina, Inc. (PHCC of NC). The story, to me, reflects "
                    },

                        "data": "the deep heritage within state’s trades and commu- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "nity, and our opportunity to publish it makes clear "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "one of the most important missions of this publica- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tion: Supporting and encouraging relevant trade "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "and professional associations within North Carolina "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "and the nation. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Relevant associations, whether they represent a "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "specific trade, political/values perspective (such as "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Car- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "olinas, which advocates for merit/open shop con- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tractors) or wider-ranging general groups such as "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "the Carolinas Associated General Contractors "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "(CAGC), all serve important roles in education, polit- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ical advocacy, and networking and membership "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "business development "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Sometimes there are controversies, and these "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "present special challenges. We want to get along "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "with everyone, but what happens when there are "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "disagreements? My policy is simple: Be fair, report "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "both sides of the controversy and look forward to "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "its resolution – which usually happens after some "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "back-and-forth. Fortunately, these disputes are "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "rare, and I’m happy to say, none are visible in this "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "month’s edition. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "We’re always ready to publish relevant associa- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tion news and welcome your own stories. However, "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "if you are a media relations specialist seeking pub- "
                    },

                        "data": "WHY. This small, three-letter word has helped define "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "the history and outcome of a distinguished list of events "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "though time. For example, why did the Wright brothers "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "travel more than 600 miles from Ohio to the Outer Banks "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "of North Carolina to construct and launch a craft they be- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "lieved would allow men to fly? "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Oh . . . I suppose I just gave it all away . . . because "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "they believed something was possible. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "So, why did a group of North Carolina master "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "plumbers come together in 1910 to form a professional "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "association? Because they, too, believed something was "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "possible. The NC contingent in Washington DC at the 2017 Legislative "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Conference meeting with Representative Virginia Foxx "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "They believed that they could better advance the pro- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "fessionalism and knowledge of their trade on behalf of "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "their and their neighbor’s families if they worked to- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "gether in ethical ways. They believed they could better "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "protect their businesses when faced with legislative or "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "regulatory overreach if they spoke with a unified voice. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "They believed in the basic premise of strength in num- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "bers. And apparently, they believed that plumbers looked "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "good in hats and bowlers, too! "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "So, they established an association that through time "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "became today’s Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "of North Carolina, Inc. (PHCC of NC) in order to live into "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "that why. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "2017 PHCC of NC President Thomas Barbour at a trade "

                    },

                        "data": "We believe that original Why is just as valid "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "now as it was then. PHCC of NC’s vision is that "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "we are dedicated to the advancement and edu- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "cation of the plumbing and HVACR industry for "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "the health, safety and comfort of society and "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "the protection of the environment. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "A commonly heard, decades-old phrase in "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "our industries is “The plumber protects the health of the "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "nation.” Today, we would add the HVACR contractor as "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "well, since our indoor air quality is also part of our health "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "concerns. Advancement . . . Education . . . Safety . . . Comfort . "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": ". . Protection. Pursuit of these values is our Why, and we "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "pursue them through our mission to become so relevant "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "that clients and the public identifies a PHCC of NC con- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tractor as the best choice for a knowledgeable and reli- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "able product and service. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "What does all this look like at PHCC of NC day-by- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "day? It looks like efforts, activities, and involvement on a "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "wide array of fronts, such as: "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Cobe LaMunyan, the 2018 PHCC of NC President of the Board "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "of Directors presenting the first place award for plumbing at the "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Skills USA competition at our Connections Conference "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "The 2018 SkillsUSA competition for high school "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "students and trade school students "
                    }

                        "data": "discuss and share best practices, to be informed of "
                    },

                        "data": "pertinent activities in their area regarding job permits, "

                    },
                    {
                        "data": "sition from merely being competitors to being col- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "leagues; • Quarterly code intensive classes are offered to help "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "contractors refresh their knowledge, and to learn "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "about any code addendums that have been put into "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "effect; • A four year apprenticeship program is available for "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "contractor members to access for training their techs "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "and for attracting new employees to their companies; "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "• PHCC staff and leadership are collaboratively involved "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "with a number of statewide and regional efforts "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "aimed at addressing the challenges of a shrinking "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "trades workforce, which includes work with the NC "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Community College System, the Department of Public "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Instruction, and NCWorks; "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "• A lobbyist is engaged by the association to keep "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "watch for NC legislation that might adversely affect a "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "member’s company or livelihood. Included in this is a "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "vigilant effort to guard against any reduction or re- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "moval of licensure for the professional services our "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "contractors provide to the public for their health and "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "safety; • An annual Connections Conference trade show – held "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "this year in Greensboro on April 11– brings vendors "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "who showcase the newest products and services "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "available to benefit P-H-C contractors, and hosts the "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "regional SkillsUSA-NC contests for high school and "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "post-secondary school students in plumbing, HVACR, "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "and sheetmetal; and "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "• Our affiliation with the PHCC-National association "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "gives our members access to an extensive library of "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "business and technical resources, national legislative "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "and federal regulatory lobbying efforts, and much "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "more. We could go on if space permitted, and we trust you "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "get the idea of the scope of our association’s endeavors "
                    },
                    {

                    },

                    },

                    },

                        "data": "Commercial construction, like any industry, has its "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ebbs and flows, its changes and expectations. Construc- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tion entrepreneurs always keep an eye on the near future, "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "figure out what's next for their businesses, and get ahead "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "of their competitors in adopting new ideas or reacting to "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "inevitable shifts in the market. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "With that in mind, here are 10 commercial construc- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tion trends to watch for in 2018. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "1. Labor shortages "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "The 2008 recession caused a serious downturn in "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "prospects for the construction industry. Since they began "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "to recover, however, construction companies have had "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "difficulty finding sufficient skilled workers to meet the de- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "mand. While it should be a purely positive sign that three- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "quarters of construction companies plan to add "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "employees in 2018, this is countered by the fact that even "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "more—82 percent —expect it will remain as difficult, or "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "even harder, to do so. Companies that solve this riddle, "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "be it through better training program, higher wages, a mix "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "of the two, or other ideas entirely, will be at an advantage. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "2. Prefab construction "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Ever since the early 1900s, when Sears sold prefabri- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "cated homes and shipped them to customers in boxes "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "for them to build on their own, the potential value in pre- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "fab construction has been apparent. Building on a con- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "trolled assembly line reduces construction time and "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "costs. For the most part, however, no one has been able "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "to put this idea to effective use; thus construction has "
                    },
                    {

                        "data": "continued in the traditional style, with workers and mate- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "rials placed on site and buildings raised from the founda- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tion up. Now, thanks to the efforts of companies like "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Katerra and buy-in from major corporations such as Mar- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "riott, modular and prefab construction are seeing a resur- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "gence. 3. Giant companies need more space "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "The biggest headline example of this is the creation of "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "a second Amazon headquarters. However, other massive "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tech companies are expanding as well. Data center in- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "vestment in 2017 far outstripped 2016; given the con- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "stantly increasing amount of data companies need to "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "store on their servers, this trend does not appear ready to "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "decline. Non-tech sector companies such as General "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Electric and Marriott are poised to open new headquar- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ters as well. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "4. Automation "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Although many labor organizations fear automation's "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "effect on the overall workforce, new advances have cre- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ated robots that can perform tasks dangerous to human "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "workers. This covers many industries, but construction "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "businesses may take note of the robot that can tie rebar "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "and form bridge decks, both for the safety of its employ- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ees and to help allay the aforementioned issues in adding "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "headcount to their companies. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "5. Resiliency "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "In 2017, the world was impacted by a remarkable num- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ber of environmental calamities. The devastation in "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Puerto Rico was the most newsworthy, but other hurri- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "canes, heat and cold waves, flooding, and other disasters "
                    }
                ]

                        "data": "all caused significant destruction. Governments and other "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "organizations are coming to understand that constantly "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "putting new buildings in place of the old is too costly, and "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "a call for more resilient construction has been amplified. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "The United States government declared November 2017 "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "to be Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "as a way to highlight the issue, and projects such as rais- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ing the streets in Miami Beach are potentially just the "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "vanguard to a more widespread movement in construc- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tion. 6. Sustainability "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Somewhat related to resiliency, in the sense of improv- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ing the environmental impact of industry activities, is the "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "trend towards even more sustainability in construction. "
                    },
                    {

                    },

                    },
                    {
                        "data": "their construction waste from all types of projects—build- "

                        "data": "ing, renovation, and demolition. "
                    },

                        "data": "7. Augmented and virtual reality, and the use of drones "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "Although the idea of a construction worker with a vir- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tual reality headset and a pair of controllers rather than a "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "hard hat and a toolbox may seem odd, this technology is "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "seeing greater adoption across the industry. Through "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "these systems, workers can control drones that serve nu- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "merous purposes, most of them designed for increased "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "safety. Inspections of high-rise buildings can be carried "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "out via drone cameras with a minimum of workers mov- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ing around in dangerous areas. In addition, building sites "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "can be mapped and monitored from angles impossible "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "for humans to reach. And, finally, AR/VR use may poten- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "tially draw in young workers who otherwise would have "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "had little or no interest in the construction industry. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "be voted on in May. Minneapolis has a Southwest light- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "rail plan that is ready to go if financing issues are re- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "solved. And Boston's Green Line is being 'rebooted', "
                    },

                    },

                        "data": "Fortunately, a reduction in growth does not mean a "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "lack of growth. Commercial construction, especially, is ex- "
                    },

                        "data": "pected to have a double-digit percentage increase in "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "starts next year, according to industry forecasts from "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "groups such as Associated General Contractors of Amer- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "ica. However, industrial and retail construction are both "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "expected to see a decline. The industrial construction as- "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "pect is especially disappointing if true, as 2017 was a "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "year of substantial growth in that sector. "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "If you're part of a commercial construction company, "
                    },
                    {
                        "data": "study these trends and use that knowledge to put your- "
                    },

                        "data": "self a step ahead of the competition. Look ahead, plan "

                    },

                    },

                        "data": "size, yard, etc.). As a result, contractors need to make "
                    },

                    },

                    },

                    },

                    },

                        "data": "the finished product, so we take the "
                    },

                    },

                    },
