The Town of Mount Pleasant broke ground Tuesday morning on Gary Santos Park, a major new recreation destination.

Centrally located along Rifle Range Road and Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway, the park will connect directly to Mount Pleasant Way, transforming the site into a community hub focused on recreation, wellness and gathering.

The project is being built by Choate Construction Company, with Liollio Architecture serving as the project designer and SeamonWhiteside providing planning and engineering support. Together with the town, the team will deliver a recreational facility that expands access to athletic spaces and community amenities.

“We are deeply honored to be building this space for the Town of Mount Pleasant alongside Liollio Architecture and SeamonWhiteside,” said Tim McIntosh, division manager for Choate Construction in Charleston. “As a resident of Mount Pleasant myself, it’s exciting to be a part of developing our community with this recreational facility and increasing access to quality spaces for our neighbors to come and enjoy.”The park is named in honor of former Mount Pleasant Town Councilmember Gary Santos, who served nearly 30 years and was known for his commitment to youth athletics and recreation.

“Coach Santos is truly the Godfather of Recreation in Mount Pleasant,” said Councilmember Jake Rambo. “It’s only fitting that a facility of this caliber will carry forward his legacy for generations to come.”

When completed, Gary Santos Park will include a two-court gymnasium with program rooms for music, art, dance and camps; three and a half lighted rectangular athletic fields; tennis and pickleball courts; picnic pavilions; a playground; maintenance facilities; and trails connecting to the Mount Pleasant Way trail system.

“This park was designed to truly have something for everyone,” said Mount Pleasant Recreation Director TJ Rostin. “From organized athletics to arts programs, youth camps and casual recreation along the trails, Gary Santos Park will be a place where residents from all walks of life can gather, stay active and connect with one another.”

Town officials said the project represents a continued investment in parks and recreational spaces that promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen community connections.
