		<paragraph><![CDATA[said Stephen E. Sandherr, AGC’s chief executive offi- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[cer. “However, construction labor shortages are a ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[challenge that can be fixed, and this association will ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[continue to do everything in its power to make sure ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[that happens.” ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[Nationally, of the nearly 2,200 survey respondents, ]]></paragraph>

		<paragraph><![CDATA[craft positions, Sandherr said. All four regions of the ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[country are experiencing similarly severe craft worker ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[shortages, with 83 percent of contractors in the West ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[and South reporting a hard time filling hourly craft po- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[sitions, almost identical to the 81 percent rate in the ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[Midwest and 75 percent rate in the Northeast. ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[In North Carolina, the data indicates two-thirds (66 ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[percent) of contractors say they are having trouble fill- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[ing positions for project managers and supervisors, ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[while 45 percent say there are difficulties in finding ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[quality control personnel and 39 percent report chal- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[lenges in recruiting Environmental compliance profes- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[sionals. Among trades, there is a 100 percent shortage of ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[pipelayers, iron workers, drywall installers and brick- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[layers, while several other trades and crafts also in ex- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[tremely short supply. The only categories reporting ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[less than 50 percent hiring difficulty are millwrights ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[and traffic control personnel. ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[Most contractors report that they expect it will ei- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[ther continue to be hard to find workers, or even more ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[difficult than before. Contractors report the pipeline ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[for adequately trained skilled workers is poor, with 55 ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[percent saying it is inadequate. ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[Disturbingly, 34 percent report there are problems ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[with workers being able to pass drug tests, and 30 ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[percent say they are having difficulties with back- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[ground checks. ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[In response to the labor shortage, 88 percent of ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[North Carolina’s surveyed contractors have raised pay ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[rates for craft workers in the past year. They are also ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[engaging with career building programs (64 percent), ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[using staffing firms (45 percent) and engaging with ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[government workforce development or \unemploy- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[ment agencies (33 percent) among other measures. ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[Nationally, Autodesk says contractors are also ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[working to increase productivity. ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[“Construction workforce shortages are prompting ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[many firms to innovate their way to greater productiv- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[ity,” said Allison Scott, head of construction integrated ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[marketing at Autodesk. “As the cost of labor continues ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[to increase and firms look to become even more effi- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[cient, technology can enable better collaboration and ]]></paragraph>

		<paragraph><![CDATA[Scott noted that 29 percent of firms report they are ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[investing in technology to supplement worker duties. ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[One-fourth of firms report they are using cutting-edge ]]></paragraph>

		<paragraph><![CDATA[it’s likely she’ll encounter the same ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[people on future jobs, cases or proj- ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[ects. That sense of directness and ]]></paragraph>
		<paragraph><![CDATA[openness also served her well on ]]></paragraph>
