State highway engineers have proposed building a bridge 17 feet above the existing N.C. 12 pavement to protect against ocean encroachment for the next half-century, The Virginian-Pilot reported.
The $200 million structure would span 2.3 miles from just north of Rodan the within the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to Myrna Peters Road near the historic Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station.
The bridge will be a fix for one of six spots where the ocean persistently breaches the only road to Hatteras Island.
