Greensboro city council addressed a significant amount of infrastructure during its Oct. 17 meeting, including authorizing an agreement with NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for an improvement project for the Elm-Pisgah Church intersection. The project has been on hold until recently, to better assess future traffic needs following the opening of the Urban Loop.

Council also approved an agreement with NCDOT for the Benjamin Parkway Sidepath project to construct a greenway sidepath along Benjamin Parkway from Battleground Avenue to Josephine Boyd Street. Work will include crossing improvements, pedestrian signal upgrades and installations at Campus Drive, Elam Avenue, Garland Drive and North Josephine Boyd Street. The project will connect schools, neighborhoods, and parks to the future A&Y Greenway, transit services, and other destinations.

Both projects will require public meetings, extensive plans and timelines to be set before work begins.

Council also authorized a contract with Atlantic Contracting Company for general sidewalk improvements beginning in January 2024 and through the end of next year. This contract includes installing sidewalks on Hornaday, Bridford Parkway, Big Tree Way and Hewitt Street and will be 1,970 linear feet of 4-feet sidewalk, and include 88 concrete curb ramps, concrete driveway replacements, minor waterline and fire hydrant relocations.

Transit needs were also addressed with approval of an ordinance to support the purchase of 15 bus shelters and six replacement paratransit vehicles for the Access GSO service that have reached the end of their useful life.
