Google Fiber is resuming its micro-trenching work in Carrboro after a month-long suspension because of Covid-19 safety fears.

The town government published a release on April 27 from Google, saying it is restarting its micro-trenching operations around the Winmore neighborhood. The project will result in a fiber optic network to deliver high-speed internet.

Google Fiber paused its work on March 20 initially for a planned two weeks, but the stoppage continued until it had confidence it could maintain a safe working environment for contractors.

The company outlined various safety measures including social distancing, using cloth face coverings or disposable masks, having hand washing stations on-site and regularly disinfecting equipment.

Google Fibre has been working in the community since December, 2019.
