The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has made a decision on a design for Interstate 40 Exit 103/Burkemont Avenue.

Drivers taking the exit will be navigating a tight diamond design which is expected to have less impact for businesses and residences than the other options. However, the design will mean the relocation eight residences and four businesses, according to an article in The News Herald.

The design requires less land because it closely aligns intersections. The new interchange will include coordinated timing of the signals, additional turn lanes, longer lanes for left-turning vehicles and an improved ramp design.

Construction is expected to start in 2020.
