The solar panels are being installed by SunEnergy1. The solar project is a partnership among three customers, including George Washington University, American University and the George Washington University Hospital.Customer First Renewables, a renewable energy integrator, facilitated the partnership.

The project consists of three phases, with the first phase is underway in Pasquotank County near Elizabeth City, representing the first 20 megawatts (MW) of the total 52-MW (AC) solar photovoltaic project.

The first phase is expected to reach commercial operation by year-end, while two other sites will be constructed in 2015.
