Charleston International Airport recently celebrated the topping out of its West Gate expansion, marking a major construction milestone just four months after breaking ground.
The expansion will add four new gates, more passenger seating, and upgrades designed to enhance the travel experience for everyone flying through the airport.
“This moment represents far more than the final beam – it reflects the collaboration, craftsmanship, and dedication of the entire project team,” Ryan Price, vice president/divisional manager at JE Dunn Construction said on social media. “From designers and builders to airport leadership and trade partners, every group has played a critical role in bringing this expansion to life.
“The West Gates Expansion will enhance capacity, improve the passenger experience, and support the continued growth of the Charleston region,” Dunn said. “We’re proud to be part of a project that will serve travelers and the community for decades to come.”
The 50,000 SF addition provides new space for passengers with dedicated space for dining, retail, concessions, and upgraded amenities. The expansion also includes 23,000 SF of advanced operational space to support international arrivals.

Ardmore Roderick is leading the project management and construction management team supporting the Charleston County Aviation Authority on the transformative project. Officials said the milestone reflects strong collaboration among the airport authority, project partners, and construction teams.
The Terminal Development Program aims to improve the passenger experience, expand capacity, and support continued economic growth across the Charleston region.
RMF is providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering for the expansion, focusing on critical building systems for passenger processing, gate operations, life safety, and long-term facility performance.
Officials noted that the project is progressing steadily, bringing the airport closer to its goal of expanded capacity and a modernized passenger experience.
