Charleston International Airport has broken ground on its West Gates Expansion project—a $105-million development set to increase gate capacity, improve international service, and enhance the overall passenger experience at South Carolina’s busiest airport.

Airport officials, local leaders and aviation partners gathered Wednesday in North Charleston to celebrate the launch of the major construction effort, which will add four new gates, more than 40,000 sq. ft. of passenger space, and nearly 4,000 square feet for food, beverage, and retail amenities.

“This expansion is about more than additional gates,” Elliott Summey, president and CEO of Charleston International Airport, said in a statement. “It’s about strengthening economic growth, expanding connectivity, and ensuring CHS continues to deliver the level of service and experience our community and visitors expect.”

The project also includes 23,000 sq. ft. of modern operations space and new international arrival capabilities. Once completed, the West Gates will connect directly to the airport’s federal inspection station, streamlining customs processing and positioning CHS to better accommodate global travel.

Construction is expected to continue through 2026, with substantial completion anticipated by the end of that year. When finished, the expansion will increase the airport’s total gate capacity by 15%.

“This is a critical investment in the future of the greater Charleston area,” said Helen Hill, Chair of the Charleston Regional Aviation Authority Board. “We are building the infrastructure today to meet the needs of tomorrow’s travelers—both domestic and international—with comfort, efficiency and Charleston’s signature hospitality.”

Airport officials say work will be staged to minimize disruption to current flight operations. Regular updates will be provided to the public as construction progresses.

Charleston International has experienced rapid passenger growth in recent years, driven by strong tourism, a growing population, and expanded airline service. The West Gates Expansion is part of the airport’s broader vision to modernize its facilities and prepare for future demand.

“This is a milestone moment for CHS and the Lowcountry,” Summey said. “We’re not just building new gates—we’re building capacity for opportunity.”
