Amazon marked the start of a major economic initiative in Richmond County with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new data center campus, joining state leaders, members of Congress, and local community representatives.

The planned $10 billion investment, announced earlier this year, is set to create 500 high-skilled jobs and support STEM education programs, along with a community fund to assist local businesses and organizations. Amazon vice-president of economic development Roger Wehner and other company officials participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking.

“This marks the beginning of a new chapter for Richmond County as we build the infrastructure that will power tomorrow’s economy,” said North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt. “Amazon’s investment — one of the largest in our state’s history — positions North Carolina at the forefront of artificial intelligence and cloud innovation for decades to come.”

Amazon is already engaging the local workforce. This week, the company partnered with Richmond Community College to offer a Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Certificate course, giving participants hands-on training from industry professionals. High school students also took part in a four-hour introductory course on careers in the data industry. In total, 80 people participated.

“Skills development creates lasting benefits for local communities, which is why we’re committed to investing in workforce training wherever we operate,” Wehner said. “Our Fusion Splicing program opens new career paths for participants who learn fiber optic installation and maintenance. These are essential skills needed to build the digital infrastructure that will connect our nation for generations to come.”

Construction of the campus is expected to have long-term economic benefits for Richmond County, including new employment opportunities and expanded access to technology education for local students.
