Ahold Delhaize USA announced plans in October to build an $860 million distribution center in Burlington, expanding its supply chain network that serves the company’s East Coast grocery brands, including Food Lion stores in North Carolina.

The new facility, operated by ADUSA Distribution and ADUSA Transportation, will add more than 1 million sq. ft. of distribution infrastructure to deliver fresh and frozen grocery items to Food Lion locations. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with operations starting in 2029. The site is projected to employ more than 500 people and will use supply chain automation technology to boost efficiency.

“The investment into this facility is an investment into the customers who trust our brands to nourish their families,” said JJ Fleeman, chief executive officer for Ahold Delhaize USA. “Through the new distribution center, ADUSA Distribution and ADUSA Transportation will expand their capacity to support Food Lion’s growth in the state, along with bringing new jobs. We’re excited to locate this facility in North Carolina and continue to grow our presence in a state where our companies have done business for more than 65 years.”

Sanja Krajnovic, chief supply chain officer and executive vice president of ADUSA Distribution and ADUSA Transportation, said the company values local support. “We appreciate the support of the City of Burlington, Guilford County and State of North Carolina in working with us on this project,” Krajnovic said. “We look forward to starting construction on the site soon, expanding our presence in the state and welcoming new associates as we prepare for the opening of the facility.”

Ahold Delhaize USA operates three other North Carolina distribution centers in Salisbury, Butner and Dunn. The company’s East Coast supply chain network operates one of the largest fleets in the region, with more than 8,000 assets covering about 125 million miles annually.
