Construction is set to begin Friday on a new Fire Station 16, a $10.8 million facility that will relocate the Fayetteville Fire Department’s company from a temporary site and serve as the first project delivered under the City’s 2022 Public Safety Bond.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for May 8 at 10 a.m. at 1710 Cedar Creek Road, where the approximately 11,000-square-foot station will be built at the corner of Cedar Creek Road and Fields Road.

The project is being built by Barr & Barr/HORUS Construction, which is serving as construction manager, with Davis Kane Architects leading design work and Cummings Group acting as owner’s advisor.

The Fayetteville Fire Department’s Station 16 is currently operating out of a leased temporary facility at 1126 Cedar Creek Road, a single-engine company station provided by Cape Fear Medical Center. The new permanent station is intended to improve operational efficiency and provide expanded space for firefighters.

The planned facility will include two drive-through apparatus bays, living and working quarters for crews, dorm rooms, a kitchen, fitness areas, offices, training and community meeting space, along with storage, decontamination and mechanical rooms. A playground is also planned on site for community use.

“This new facility will give our firefighters the space to operate safely and effectively, while also serving as a resource for the community,” said Fire Chief Kevin Dove. “We’re proud to break ground on something the community has needed for a long time.”

Fire Station 16 is the first project under the City’s $60 million Public Safety Bond, approved by voters in 2022 to fund fire and public safety infrastructure upgrades.

Future projects under the bond include a new Fire Station 9 and renovations to Fire Station 2, the department’s oldest station.

Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2027.
