Bank of America Stadium, home to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and Major League Soccer’s Charlotte Football Club, is set for major renovations after the Local Government Commission (LGC) approved $765 million in financing requests from the city of Charlotte.
The largest approval, $650 million in special obligation bonds, will be used for upgrades to the stadium and related facilities. The Panthers ownership has pledged an additional $150 million for the project. Renovations will include modernized plumbing, electrical and air conditioning systems, updated scoreboards and lighting, upgraded seating, and a new upper-deck fan zone.
Under the plan, seating will be expanded, video displays and sound systems will be updated and improvements will be made to accessibility and reconfigured event spaces aimed at boosting revenue potential beyond football. Officials said the renovations will also allow the venue to better host concerts, conventions and other major events.
The North Carolina State Auditor’s Office will oversee the use of public funds, a measure intended to promote transparency in the project’s execution.
Construction is slated to begin in 2026 and proceed in phases so that the Carolina Panthers and Major League Soccer’s Charlotte FC can continue to play home games at the stadium during the upgrades. Completion is expected by 2029.
Bank of America Stadium opened in 1996 and has hosted Panthers home games since then as well as MLS matches for Charlotte FC. It has undergone periodic renovations over the years but has lagged behind newer facilities in amenities and technology, according to team and city officials.
