A new study from the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) rail division highlights the benefits of restoring passenger rail service between Salisbury and Asheville, a move that could boost construction employment and build links between western North Carolina and the rest of the state.

Capital investment in the corridor is projected to generate significant economic activity during construction, supporting an estimated 5,280 jobs per year, $360.5 million in employee earnings, $1.05 billion in economic output, and $33.6 million in state and local tax revenue over the course of project implementation.

“The Western NC rail corridor presents a unique opportunity to strengthen regional connectivity, support local economies, and create a more resilient and dynamic transportation system for North Carolina,” said Jason Orthner, NCDOT Rail Division director. “The interest this route is receiving underscores the opportunity to better connect western North Carolina to the state’s existing intercity passenger rail network.”

The Western North Carolina Rail Corridor Economic Impact Report details how service along the corridor would connect the Charlotte metropolitan area, Piedmont Triad, Research Triangle, and Blue Ridge region, improving access for residents, workers, and visitors while supporting long-term economic growth.

Once operational, passenger rail service along the corridor could generate $59.8 million in annual economic output, and $1.8 million in recurring state and local tax revenue.

The study notes the project is not currently funded, but NCDOT encourages residents and visitors to take advantage of NC By Train, the department’s existing intercity passenger rail service. NC By Train offers comfortable seating with charging outlets, free WiFi, and a variety of discounts for children, students, active military personnel, veterans, and seniors, as well as group savings through its Share Fare program.
