Charlotte-based Edifice Construction has begun work on the first phase of Charleston’s Lowcountry Lowline, a linear park and multi-use trail that will run through downtown. The project will repurpose a former railroad corridor into pedestrian and bicycle space designed to reconnect neighborhoods, expand green infrastructure, and improve natural flood mitigation.Phase One spans roughly 1.6 miles from Mount Pleasant Street to Line Street beneath Interstate 26. Edifice Construction is leading the $6 million effort, part of a $15 million total commitment from the city funded through tax-increment financing.

When finished, the corridor will include separate pedestrian and bicycle paths, landscaped medians, pocket parks, and public gathering areas. Nature-based stormwater management features, such as rain gardens and runoff capture systems, are also planned to address persistent flooding in downtown neighborhoods.

Future phases will extend the park nearly two miles to Marion Square, enhancing neighborhood connectivity and encouraging economic activity along the route. Phase One is expected to be completed in early 2027.
