Skanska has signed a $69 million contract with Durham Technical Community College to build the school’s new health sciences building, a three-story, 80,000-square-foot facility that will expand training opportunities in several high-demand medical fields.

The total project cost is estimated at $77 million, funded through a 2022 bond referendum. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025 and wrap up in November 2027.

The new facility will house Durham Tech’s nursing, surgical technology, anesthesia technology, respiratory therapy, clinical research and occupational therapy programs. Plans also include 21 allied health labs and simulation spaces, four classrooms, two computer labs, 1,600 square feet of student collaboration areas, 14,000 square feet of academic support space and 1,500 square feet of building support.

Atlanta-based architecture firm Lord Aeck Sargent is designing the project, with Skanska serving as construction manager and 35 North as project manager.

“This facility will give our students access to modern training environments that reflect the realities of today’s health care system,” Durham Tech officials said in a statement.

The new building is expected to provide a significant boost to the region’s health care workforce pipeline as demand for trained medical professionals continues to grow across North Carolina.
