OPAL Fuels Inc. has entered into a joint venture with an affiliate of Republic Services Inc. to build a renewable natural gas facility at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill in Concord.
The facility, jointly owned by OPAL and a Republic Services affiliate, will have an initial annual design capacity of approximately 1.4 million MMBtu. The project marks the conversion of an existing OPAL-owned renewable electricity facility and includes a new long-term gas rights agreement for the RNG plant.
OPAL has already begun investing in the construction of the facility, which is expected to become operational in line with typical development timelines for RNG projects.
Using proven technology, the facility will capture biomethane produced from the decomposition of organic material at the landfill and convert it into RNG, a low-carbon alternative to conventional transportation fuel.
“This facility further advances OPAL Fuels’ positioning as a leader in the development, operation, and distribution of RNG that provides a sustainable and cost-effective fuel solution for fleets,” said Jonathan Maurer, co-CEO of OPAL Fuels. “We appreciate increased collaboration with best-in-class partners as we continue to bring cost-effective solutions for partners, fleet customers, and the local communities they serve.”
The project adds to OPAL Fuels’ growing portfolio of biogas conversion sites and expands Republic Services’ commitment to sustainable waste solutions.
